The RGS Global Journalism Competition 2025 has once again showcased the creativity, insight and talent of students from across the Royal Grammar School Guildford family. This year’s competition brought together aspiring writers from different continents under a powerful and deeply personal theme:“Letter to a Future Self.”
Reflecting the truly international nature of the RGS community, submissions were received from students representing RGS Guildford, RGS Dubai and RGS Nanjing, highlighting the diverse experiences, ambitions and perspectives that unite students across the group.
Through their letters, students were encouraged to pause and reflect on the people they are today while imagining the individuals they hope to become in the future. The resulting entries explored themes of personal growth, resilience, ambition, friendship and the challenges of navigating an ever-changing world. Each piece offered a unique snapshot of a young person’s hopes and aspirations, while also revealing shared values that resonate across cultures and countries.
Among the featured submissions were thoughtful contributions from Labeeb of RGS Guildford, Amelia of RGS Dubai and Caroline of RGS Nanjing, whose work demonstrated both maturity and originality in responding to the competition brief. Their letters reflected the courage to dream boldly, the willingness to learn from setbacks and the importance of staying true to personal values as they look towards the future.
Beyond recognising excellent writing, the competition serves as an important platform for students to develop essential journalistic and communication skills. By encouraging self-reflection and authentic storytelling, the initiative helps young writers find their voice while connecting with peers across the global RGS network.
